The Art of Aromatherapy

Have you ever stopped to consider what your workday smells like?

Believe it or not, what you smell while you work can actually make you more productive.

Aromatherapy is not just for spa treatments or relaxing at home.

The Takasago Corporation in Japan conducted a study to find out how smells affect the accuracy of typists.  When the typists smelled lemon, they made 54% fewer errors.  But when they smelled lavender, errors only decreased by 20%.

Other studies have also shown that certain scents that evoke positive autobiographical memories may be able to also lift your mood and reduce stress.

Essential Benefits

Essential oils derived from plants and used in aromatherapy have several nourishing benefits for your brain.

Despite the fact that humans don't use their olfactory sense as much as other animals, smell is still the strongest of our five senses.

The scent of your work environment could help boost your brain activity and increase productivity.  Whether inside of an office or working from home, choose a scent that will stimulate your mind.

Try a citrus room spray or candle with grapefruit notes—lemon helps to increase your focus while grapefruit reduces mental fatigue.

Orange scents can ease anxiety.

Drop peppermint oil into your diffuser, which can help clear your mind and boost your attentiveness.

The smell of jasmine can calm your nerves and help you feel more confident.

Light a scented candle or burn incense—find what works for you, and notice the difference as you Flow through your day.
